Dental hygiene

Tartar on teeth is a hardened layer of plaque deposits that forms on the tooth surface due to mineralization. The dentist’s motivation for removing tartar is to prevent gum inflammation and other oral problems.

Why is it important to remove tartar?

Tartar and plaque on teeth can lead to serious gum diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. They can also cause tooth discoloration, cavities, and even tooth loss.

How is tartar removed?

Tartar on teeth can only be removed by a dentist. It is usually removed mechanically using a special ultrasonic scaler, which uses vibrations to separate the tartar from the tooth without damaging the tooth surface.
  • It can only be removed by a dentist

Tartar is most commonly removed mechanically using a special ultrasonic tip that vibrates to detach the tartar from the tooth without damaging the tooth surface.
  • What does tartar removal involve?

Cleaning plaque deposits, removing tartar, polishing the edges of old or faulty fillings, and eliminating tooth stains caused by smoking, coffee, or tea.
  • What after tartar removal?

After tartar removal, it is very important to thoroughly polish all surfaces of the tooth crown and root to make them less prone to new plaque buildup.

How often should tartar be removed?

Tartar should be removed once or twice a year, depending on how quickly new deposits form.

Often, patients decline tartar removal because they had it done just a few months earlier.

A large amount of plaque and tartar can build up on teeth in a short time. Even small amounts of plaque make the tooth surface rough, which accelerates tartar formation. The tendency to develop tartar or plaque varies from person to person and depends on proper oral hygiene, which also affects the frequency of removal.

Tartar creates an ideal environment for bacteria that can cause tooth and gum diseases. Regular tartar removal is crucial for preventing gingivitis and periodontitis, helping maintain healthy teeth and gums.

For patients with periodontal disease, the procedure may need to be repeated several times a year.

Why remove tartar at Centrodent?

At Centrodent, we remove tartar properly and thoroughly. Our dentists need 30 to 60 minutes (depending on the amount of tartar) to carefully eliminate it. We pay special attention to areas that are harder for patients to reach during brushing, such as the back teeth.

Common questions about tartar

We recommend removing tartar every six months, but this frequency can be adjusted depending on your oral health and hygiene habits.

For most people, tartar removal twice a year is enough to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

However, people with periodontal issues such as periodontitis, gingivitis, or gum recession often need more frequent treatments, for example every three to four months.

Smokers and those who frequently consume coffee, tea, or carbonated drinks may develop tartar faster, requiring more regular removal.

Poor oral habits, like improper or insufficient tooth cleaning, can also accelerate plaque and tartar buildup.

Incorporating floss, interdental brushes, or a dental water jet into your daily routine can significantly reduce the need for frequent tartar removal.

It’s important to note that a white-coated tongue, or white deposits on the tongue, can cause increased plaque and tartar buildup on the inner surfaces of the teeth.

Therefore, proper tongue hygiene should also be given attention as part of maintaining oral health.

Tartar removal is usually not painful, but it can cause mild discomfort, especially if teeth are sensitive or if there is a large amount of tartar.

Thanks to modern methods like ultrasonic cleaning, the procedure is quick and safe, and most patients feel comfortable during treatment.

However, for patients with very sensitive teeth or gums, we can apply local anesthesia to completely eliminate any discomfort.

This ensures a painless and relaxed experience, making tartar removal pleasant and stress-free.

After the treatment, teeth may be slightly sensitive, but this sensation passes quickly. Regular cleaning helps prevent further tartar buildup and tooth sensitivity.

Ultrasonic tartar removal uses high-frequency vibrations to effectively break down hardened deposits.

This method is faster and more comfortable for patients, allowing thorough tartar removal without damaging the enamel.

At the same time, a water spray rinses away loosened tartar and cools the surfaces to make the procedure as gentle as possible.

Ultrasonic tartar removal is especially effective for larger deposits and patients prone to tartar buildup.

After tartar removal, we always polish all tooth surfaces to slow down new tartar formation and maintain enamel smoothness.

Yes, it is completely normal for teeth to be sensitive after tartar removal, especially if there was a large amount of tartar or if the gums were inflamed.

During the procedure, accumulated tartar covering parts of the teeth and gums is removed, which can temporarily make teeth more sensitive to cold, heat, or acidic foods and drinks.

This sensitivity usually lasts a few days and gradually decreases. We recommend using toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoiding very cold or hot drinks immediately after the treatment.

If the sensitivity persists for a longer time or becomes more intense, we advise visiting a dentist to check the condition of your teeth and gums.

At Centrodent, the cost of tartar removal is €70, and the procedure lasts at least 40 minutes. During the cleaning, we do not focus only on the front teeth but thoroughly remove all tartar from all teeth and surfaces.

We pay special attention to removing tartar below the gum line because if left untreated, it can lead to gingivitis and later periodontitis.

After tartar removal, we polish all surfaces of all teeth, including your old fillings, which further reduces the chance of new plaque buildup and ensures a long-lasting feeling of cleanliness and freshness.

Removing tartar at home is neither recommended nor safe.

Tartar is a hard deposit firmly attached to the tooth surface and gums. Improper removal can damage the enamel and injure the gums.

This creates more space for bacteria to accumulate and cause inflammation.

Most methods advertised for "home tartar removal" are ineffective. They might remove surface plaque but not actual tartar.

Professional tartar cleaning is performed in the dental office using special ultrasonic instruments. This procedure is safe, effective, and supervised by experts.

Attempts to remove tartar at home often cause more harm than good.
