Dentures

Dentures replace a fully edentulous jaw with a complete denture and a partially edentulous jaw with a partial denture, restoring both function and aesthetics.

What types of dentures are available?

  • Vacuum-retained dentures

These are traditional dentures that have been used for many years. They adhere to the palate using suction, providing stability and security during chewing and speaking.
  • Palate-free dentures

As the name suggests, these dentures do not have a plate that covers the palate. This makes them more comfortable for many patients, especially those who experience discomfort from palatal coverage.

  • Wironit dentures

Wironit dentures are made from a special metal alloy known as wironit, which is extremely lightweight and durable. These dentures are thinner than traditional ones, offering greater comfort and discretion.

  • Soft dentures

Also known as flexible or elastic dentures, these are made from soft materials, often silicone. They are very comfortable and adaptable, and are often recommended for patients with sensitive gums.

What should you know about dentures?

It’s important to understand the key differences between partial dentures, which are used when a patient still has some natural teeth, and full dentures, which are required in cases of complete tooth loss.

Partial dentures are designed to blend in with the remaining natural teeth, replacing missing ones while helping maintain facial structure and ensuring proper distribution of chewing forces. They rely on the existing teeth for added stability and often use metal clasps that anchor onto the natural teeth.

On the other hand, full dentures are needed when no natural teeth remain. These cover the entire jaw and replace all missing teeth. The fabrication of full dentures requires precise impressions to ensure a snug fit against the gums, which is essential for comfort and functionality.

Understanding this distinction is crucial for choosing the most suitable type of denture, one that meets your needs and offers the best possible function and aesthetic outcome.

Which type of denture should you choose?

Choosing the right type of denture depends on several factors, including the patient’s oral health, personal preferences, and financial situation.

It’s important to understand that the most expensive denture is not necessarily the best option for every patient. The key is to select a solution that best fits the individual's specific needs - ensuring optimal function, aesthetics, and comfort in daily use.

The cost of dentures varies depending on the type and the specific requirements of each case. That’s why it’s essential for patients to understand the differences between various types of dentures in order to make an informed choice. The selected denture should align with both the patient’s health status and their budget.

Understanding the distinctions between different denture types is crucial when making a well-informed decision.

Each type of denture has its own advantages, and the choice depends on factors such as the number of remaining teeth, the condition of the gums, overall health, and the condition of the oral cavity.

A detailed consultation with a dentist will help determine which type of denture is best suited to restore function and improve the appearance of the smile, while also integrating smoothly into the patient’s everyday life.

Patient education on denture care and hygiene is also a vital part of ensuring the longevity and performance of the prosthesis.

With the right choice and proper care, dentures can significantly enhance quality of life.

Vacuum-retained dentures

When choosing a denture, it's important to understand the differences between the available options depending on each patient's specific needs.

Patients with a completely edentulous jaw can replace missing teeth with an acrylic full denture. Upper dentures are held in place by vacuum (suction), which in some cases may cause discomfort or a gag reflex.
With lower dentures, the absence of a palate can lead to instability while chewing.

Apart from the classic acrylic full denture, patients without any teeth also have the option of implant-supported dentures. When considering palate-free solutions for edentulous jaws, dental implants are the only viable option.

For patients who still have a few remaining natural teeth, partial dentures are available, offering additional stability by anchoring to the existing teeth.

Partial denture options include: acrylic partial dentures and Wironit (metal framework) dentures, which use metal clasps to attach securely to natural teeth for added stability.

Another option is the soft (flexible) denture, made of silicone. Silicone dentures come with transparent clasps, making them less noticeable. However, they absorb colour from food, are less durable, and cannot be repaired in case of damage, unlike acrylic or wironit framework dentures.

Understanding these differences is key to selecting the best option that matches your individual needs and allows you to enjoy daily comfort and optimal denture function.

Common questions about dentures

Advantages of vacuum-retained dentures:
  • Cost-effective solution: Acrylic dentures are generally more affordable compared to other types of dentures.
  • Quick fabrication: These dentures typically require less time to make than other options.

Disadvantages of vacuum-retained dentures:
  • Possible discomfort: Acrylic dentures can cause irritation and rubbing, especially during the initial period of adjustment.
  • Reduced stability: Full acrylic dentures adhere to the palate through suction, which may result in less stability when chewing or speaking.

Advantages of wironit dentures:
  • Extremely Lightweight: Wironit dentures are very light, making them more comfortable to wear.
  • Durability: The Wironit material is highly durable, resulting in longer-lasting dentures.

Disadvantages of wironit dentures:
  • Higher Cost: Wironit dentures are often more expensive compared to acrylic alternatives.
  • Requires Precise Adjustment: Fabrication and fitting demand precision and professional expertise.

Advantages of implant-supported dentures:
  • Excellent Stability: Implant-supported dentures offer exceptional stability, as the implants are firmly anchored into the jawbone.
  • Natural Look and Function: They provide a natural-looking smile and allow for normal chewing function. Common types include All-on-4, snap-on dentures, and bar-retained dentures.

Disadvantages of implant-supported dentures:
  • Higher Cost: Implant placement and the associated denture solutions are typically more expensive than other options.
  • Surgical Procedure Required: Implant placement involves surgery, which may not be suitable for all patients.

Advantages of flexible (soft) dentures:
  • Exceptional Comfort: Flexible dentures are extremely comfortable to wear and cause less irritation to the soft tissues in the mouth.
  • Adaptability: They can conform to the shape and texture of the oral cavity, enhancing overall comfort.

Disadvantages of flexible (soft) dentures:
  • Lower durability: Flexible dentures are generally less durable than other types and may need to be replaced sooner.
  • Higher Cost: The price of flexible dentures is typically higher compared to acrylic dentures.

Proper denture care is essential to maintain their longevity and functionality.

Dentures are a durable solution for edentulous jaws, but only if maintained regularly and correctly.

Here are some important guidelines to follow if you wear dentures:
  • After each meal, clean your denture with a brush and plain water, without using toothpaste.
  • In the evening, before going to bed, place your denture in a dedicated cleaning solution (e.g. tablets). If you don’t wear your denture while sleeping, always keep it in water.
  • Avoid frequently removing your denture, especially in the beginning. Wear it as much as possible to get used to it more quickly.
  • Visit your dentist at least once a year, as dentures can lose stability over time. In such cases, they need to be relined.
  • Always see your dentist if you experience any damage to your denture, such as if it falls, or if you notice sore spots on your gums.
Never attempt to remove tartar from your denture on your own, as you might damage it. Tartar should only be removed by a dental professional.

You can sleep with your denture if you prefer, but it must be cleaned beforehand.

Over time, dentures may cause irritation or sores on the gums. If this happens, consult your dentist so the denture can be relined and properly adjusted.

Dentures can be repaired in various ways depending on the type and extent of the damage. If a tooth falls out or breaks, it is usually possible to replace it. In cases of more significant damage, a full repair or relining may be required. In any case, it's important to contact your dentist immediately so the issue can be resolved as soon as possible.

If you notice tartar buildup on your denture, do not try to remove it yourself, as you may damage the surface. In our clinic, we offer professional denture cleaning and polishing. The denture is placed in an ultrasonic bath with water at 60°C for 40 minutes, after which it is thoroughly polished. For more severe contamination, the denture is sent to a dental lab for deep cleaning and polishing.
