Dental curettage

Tooth curettage is a procedure that removes accumulated plaque from the tooth surface, tooth root, and beneath the gum tissue.

Tartar buildup beneath the gum line

Just as tartar forms between and around teeth due to plaque buildup, the same process occurs beneath the gum surface. In this area, it can cause much more damage. Tartar provides an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply, which can lead to gum inflammation, loss of bone support, and ultimately tooth loss.

How is tooth curettage performed?

Using curettes, the hard surfaces of the tooth are “scraped” and polished to remove deposits and bacteria that cause gum inflammation, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss - periodontitis. Periodontitis is a disease affecting the supporting structures of the tooth, including the gums, fibers connecting the tooth root to the gums and bone. Symptoms include gum bleeding, swollen and dark red gums, and bad breath.

Bacterial deposits form pockets that need to be cleaned to reduce their depth. Removing these deposits halts tissue destruction. It also reduces pocket depth because shallow pockets create less favorable conditions for bacterial growth, resulting in improved periodontal health.

Laser tooth curettage

Therapy should begin as soon as possible. At our clinic, curettage is performed using a laser, which enhances the effectiveness and success of the treatment. Additionally, laser therapy is less invasive and therefore less painful.

During curettage, the depth of the pocket is first measured. Then, bacteria and damaged tissue are removed with the laser, while tartar deposits are mechanically cleaned. The laser also treats the surface to eliminate bacteria, allowing the gums to reattach to the clean tooth surface.

The laser energy is directed only at the inflamed area, leaving healthy tissue intact.

In some cases, therapy can be done using only the laser, while in others a combination of laser and curettage is necessary.

Laser dental curettage procedure

During this step, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned of hard and soft deposits that accumulate daily. These cannot be completely removed by regular brushing.

Special attention is given to the area below the gum line, where bacteria and plaque most often accumulate, causing inflammation and gum recession.

After the tartar has been removed, the teeth are additionally polished to make the surface smooth and less prone to future buildup.

The laser beam penetrates into the periodontal pockets and destroys the bacteria that accumulate there.

In this way, gum inflammation and bleeding are reduced, and the tissue is prepared for faster and easier healing.

The Doctor Smile Wiser 3 laser stimulates the tissue cells and promotes their natural regeneration.

In this way, healing is accelerated and discomfort after the treatment is reduced, while the gums gradually reattach firmly to the tooth.

Common questions about dental curettage

The purpose of dental curettage is to remove bacteria and deposits beneath the gum line, thereby reducing inflammation and preventing the progression of periodontitis.

In this way, the gums can reattach firmly to the tooth, keeping the teeth stable and protected in the long term.

Dental curettage is needed when periodontitis develops, that is, when the supporting tissues of the teeth become inflamed.

At this stage, periodontal pockets form where plaque, tartar, and bacteria accumulate and can no longer be removed with regular cleaning.

Symptoms such as bleeding and redness of the gums, gum recession, persistent bad breath, and tooth mobility may occur.

To stop the inflammation and prevent further loss of bone and teeth, dental curettage is performed as a deep cleaning below the gum line.

Laser dental curettage is better than classical curettage because it allows for more precise and thorough removal of bacteria from periodontal pockets, while simultaneously disinfecting the tissue.

The procedure is less painful, less invasive, reduces bleeding and accelerates healing, making it more comfortable for the patient and more effective in the long-term preservation of teeth.

The frequency of dental curettage depends on the condition of the periodontium and the depth of the pockets, but it is most often recommended once or twice a year.

In more severe cases of periodontitis, check-ups and repeated curettage may be needed more frequently, as determined by the dentist.

Recovery after dental curettage is usually quick and without major complications. After the procedure, it is normal to feel mild sensitivity or discomfort for a few days, but this decreases as the gums heal.

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene and follow the dentist’s instructions (e.g., rinsing with the recommended solution, avoiding hard food in the first days).

With laser curettage, recovery is even faster because the procedure is less invasive, bleeding is minimal, and tissue healing is stimulated by the laser.
